Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE) are systematic evaluations to measure the client’s physical abilities and limitations. The FCE utilizes simulated work settings in controlled environments to assess an individual’s ability to perform the specific functions of a job.

FCEs are valuable tools in determining the potential of returning injured employees to work. Additionally, the FCE can provide valuable information as a pre-employment screening tool and establish functional baselines prior to possible on-the-job injury.

The FCE is completed under the direct supervision of a licensed physical or occupational therapist and includes:

• Musculoskeletal screen
• Functional testing
• Endurance testing
• Validity testing
• Capabilities/limitations testing
